Homemade Peach Iced Cream

When plump juicy peaches are in season, there are two fabulous recipes that are guaranteed to take full advantage of nature's bounty: my Mom's phenomenal Peach Crisp and this rich and creamy homemade Peach Iced Cream. One of the classic, summertime desserts, homemade iced cream can be made using any variety of local fresh fruit that tickles your fancy. With a basket of fresh Ontario peaches, some sugar, cream, vanilla and my treasured Lello gelato machine ready to go, we were enjoying homemade Ontario Peach Iced Cream under the stars an hour or two later, for a cool finish to a hot summer evening.

Peach Iced Cream
Serves 6-8

5 chopped fresh peaches
3/4 cup white sugar, divided
2 cups half and half
1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tsp vanilla extract

Combine peaches with 1/2 cup of sugar and let stand for one hour. Place the mixture in food processor and pulse until peaches are coarsely chopped. Add the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, half and half, cream and vanilla to the peach mixture. Start the ice cream maker and pour the mixture into the bowl attachment and churn for 30 to 40 minutes or until the desired consistency. Scoop the iced cream into a plastic iced cream storage tub and place in the freezer until the mixture hardens, then serve topped with sliced peaches if desired.
